the INTERNSHIP

Rated PG-13
Running time: 119 Minutes

In Twentieth Century Fox's The Internship, obsolete salesmen Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson suddenly lose their jobs when their company closes and they apply for a summer internship job - at Google, the gigantic Internet search engine.
Written, Produced, and Starring Vince Vaughn this comedy is a nice, feel-good movie for the summer with a strong Google and fanboy slant. Totally different from The Social Network - the other computer website related movie - and the small audience that I saw The Internship with was laughing throughout the entire movie. Actually, the young cast of the movie made me feel like I was watching a college oriented film with people who have dreams. What is sad is the reason that Vaughn and Owen lost their jobs. Now these old guys have to compete the young tech-savvy college crowd. As Owens says, They are looking at some sort of mental Hunger Games against a bunch of geniuses kids for just like a handful of jobs. Of course being the old interns, Vaughn and Owen have no idea of what all the fan boy slang is that the interns Josh Brener, Tiya Sircar, Dylan O'Brien, and Tobit Raphael are using.
I liked the fact that they played Muggle Quiditch. I had never realized that they actually had created a game called Muggle Quiditch. Given the fact that the game is played on the ground, Muggle Quiditch pretty much follows Wizard Quiditch. Muggle Quiditch was actually pretty much fun to watch.
John Goodman's uncredited cameo as Vaughn's and Wilson's boss was great as always. Will Ferrell's cameo was also uncredited. There is also a cameo by Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin.
This movie is basically about fitting in amongst this complicated world, especially with computers. Learning about computers in order to run the help desk appeared to be daunting as Vaughn can attest to. It is a sad state of affairs that Vaughn and Wilson lose their jobs because their company was outdated and the business had to close.
A lot of Google products were shown, including Google's Gmail, Google Plus, Google Wallet and Google Maps, and the Google's self-driving car gets a cameo too. While the movie may be considered a commercial for Google, I liked the fact that I got to know more about Google and it's culture. There have been reports from Google interns that a lot of the movie is pretty accurate.
The end credits were designed by Google's creative team.
Rated PG-13 for sexual situations, language, and violence. Running time: 119 Minutes.

The Other Guys
Columbia Pictures
Rated PG-13
Running time: 107 min

In Columbia Pictures The Other Guys, Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson are a couple of gung ho urban street cops. And then there are The Other Guys - Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, desk jockey precinct detectives. Ferrell and Wahlberg are stuck in the background who are forced to do the Jackson's and Johnson's paperwork. When Ferrell goes after a high profile multi-billionaire investment banker Steve Coogan for a building code violation, partners Ferrell and Wahlberg soon find themselves linked into New York City's biggest crime.
With the movie as a combination Lethal Weapon and Beverly Hills Cop, Jackson and Johnson make a great combo as street cops - but make no mistake, as the trailers may be misleading, the movie is really about the other guys Ferrell and Wahlberg. In fact, several people walked out of the theater when they realized the movie was no longer about Jackson and Johnson early in the movie. Although I think a full movie with Jackson and Johnson really as cops would be a fun movie, and there are talks with making a prequel movie about Jackson and Johnson. Mismatched Ferrell and Wahlberg grew on me as they took on the investment banker investigation - with accountant Ferrell having the hot babes like Eva Mendes interested in Ferrell, and of disgraced Wahlberg's unfortunate meeting with major league MVP baseball player Derek Jeter. After watching Ferrell and Wahlberg in the movie, it makes me realize what a waste it is not to get civilians to sit at the desks to do the clerical and administration of police business so they can free up real cops to be out on the street. Also, while the police do a very important job, it is sad to realize the police are not being paid very much because police captain Michael Keaton has to get a second job with Bed Bath & BEYOND to put his bi-sexual son through college. During the end credits, there are financial graphics displayed, along with the results of fraud schemes in keeping with the money laundering plot of the movie. There is also an outtake of the restaurant scene after the credits.
Rated PG-13 for violence and sexual situations.

Land of the Lost

Universal Studios
Rated PG-13
Running time: 102 minutes
Land of the Lost, Universal Studios updated version of the TV series Land of the Lost, is a Will Ferrell vehicle. Do not expect the family based TV show on which the movie is based on. Just think of this movie as a Will Ferrell movie with elements of the Land of the Lost TV show. There was one point in the movie where I sang the theme song, actually two points in the movie as the theme song was actually done in the movie. Since the main characters have been replaced by adults, there are adult themes in the movie - as a result, this is not a good film to bring young children to.
TV host Matt Lauer bashes Will Ferrell in a TV interview. To prove himself, Ferrell, Anna Friel, and Danny McBride search for proof - and fall through a space-time vortex. They get sucked into the Land of the Lost - which holds iconic junk from our universe, along with dinosaurs, cave person Jorma Taccone as Cha-Ka, and the remains of a lizard-like civilization.
I saw this movie with family and friends. We went to this movie expecting a light-hearted film. Being a fan of the TV show which I saw when I was a kid, I was surprised the movie was better than I thought it would be given that I knew it was going to be a Will Ferrell movie - and not really based on the TV show. If you look at it as a light-hearted comment on society and not some deep intellectual film, you can have some fun with it.
Rated PG-13 for violence and sexual situations. Running time: 102 minutes.
